1. What is your favourite car that you have owned and why?
1. I had a Mitsubishi evo 8 MR340 for a while. It was awesome fun
and got 4 people in easy. It was almost too quick for the roads though
and had so much grip I ended up going quicker than I should - so I
sold it! But my wife still has a Skyline R33 GTR which we don't use
often but its still mega fun.
2. What advice would you give to people wishing to take up motorsport?
2. Try karting first. Motorsport is great fun and if you can get
quick in a kart (have a go here at Knockhill) and you still have the
bug then car racing is great. Scottish Championship racing in XR2's,
Formula Ford single seaters is a great place to start and you can hire
cars too so you don't have to own a car , just arrive and drive.
3. One of our members Jamie has just recently had a major car
accident, what advice could you give him to help improve his driving
skills & confidence?
3. I would go to Knockhill and do one of the Advanced On road
courses. You get tuition in your own car out on the roads to build
confidence and techniques for safer driving but you also get the bonus
of time on the Skid Pan in Knockhill cars which is invaluable. I
reckon everyone should have skid training as part of the driving test.
Think about it the first time most people have a skid they don't know
what is happening and crash, much better to practice safely.
4. How do you prepare for a race?
4. Race weekends are really busy especially with 3 races in a day.
Then you have sponsor commitmnents, pR stuff, and of course all the
data to got hrough to try and improve the car. I hardly have a minute
to myself so the only time I get to think about the race is when im in
the car (and even then you have people taking pics etc) Its all cool
though and you learn to block everything out and focus on the job in
hand. It aked a bit of doing getting yourself in the right frame of
mind to be doing 140mph with 20 other lunatics.
5. What is your favourite racing circuit and why?
5. Obviously I love Knockhill. It's a mega drivers challenge. Tight
twisty and technical with loads of ups and downs, its just great fun.
I also like Zandvoort in Holland and my least favoured cicuit is
Silverstone.
6. In the world of motorsport who do you look up to and why? What
about outwith motorsport?
6. I don't really have any idols as such but I look up to my
Engineers in the team because its their development which makes the
car quick. I actually get on really well with Matt Neal as well
havving spent 2 years as team mates and mates. He helps me out like a
brother which is ace.
7. Do you find people treat you differently now that you are a
household name?
7. Not at all , im not a household name, just ended up doing
something which has a bit of profile. I used to watch Touring Cars as
a kid and always wanted to to it and iv been really really lucky to
have it all come together.
8. In motorsport or outwith motorsport what is your most memorable
moment to date?
8. Most memorable moment was my first BTCC win at Oulton Park in
06. It was such a relief to win having spent so many years trying to
get to BTCC. Also winning at Knockhill last year was insane, I had so
much support from the crowd it meant loads.
9. What do you keep in your glovebox?
9. Nothing.
10. What do you have in your cd player of your car?
10. Currently I have Moby, Timbaland and Red Hot Chillis
11. (One from the site) Does your car reflect the kind of person you
are?
11. mmm not sure really. Ive got a 4x4 now but not sure I would be a
typical 4x4 driver. Having sais that if you had asked me when I was 17
if I would be driving an automatic before I was 30 I would have
laughed but now I wouldn't have it any other way. I like it when
people personalise their cars though. Wheels, tunes, etc . Why be
boring and have exactly the same car as thousands of others that
rolled off the production line. I wouldn't want to wear exactly the
same clothes as 50,000 others so I wouldn't want to drive a car the
same as 50,000 others.
